North Carolina Climate & Jobs Roundtable Build Back Better Act
The Build Back Better Agenda is an ambitious plan to create jobs, cut taxes, and lower costs for working families – all paid for by making the tax code fairer and making the wealthiest and large corporations pay their fair share.
North Carolinians are increasingly feeling the brunt of the climate crisis. Between 2010 and 2020, North Carolina experienced 42 extreme weather events, costing the state up to $50 billion in damages. Flooding in Western North Carolina last month claimed the lives of six people in Haywood County, destroyed more than 200 homes, and cost nearly $19 million in damages to public infrastructure. July 2021 was set as the world’s hottest month ever recorded, with new records expected as the climate crisis worsens. The recent IPCC report lays out that unless we take urgent climate action now, we are headed towards 1.5 degrees warming by 2040.
To make matters worse, climate impacts are disproportionately devastating our already most disadvantaged communities — low-income, working-class, and racially and ethnically diverse communities.
